St Chads Primary pupils explore Commonwealth cultures

COLOURFUL WORLD cultures were together brought under one roof by primary school pupils for their exciting ‘Britain and Beyond’ project.

St Chad’s Primary School designated a week to looking at British values and customs compared to those around the globe as part of their humanities work.

Each of the classes was assigned a commonwealth country and learned about their food, flags, significant people and events, and history.

Reception classes looked at Papua New Guinea and South Africa while Year One studied Jamaica, Year One/Two India, Year Two Ghana, Year Three Australia, Year Three/Four Singapore, Year Four/Five Canada, Year Five/Six New Zealand and Year Six Fiji.

Their hard work culminated in a full-school assembly in the hall, which was brightly decked with flags and banners, to present their research.

A sea of brightly coloured pupils gathered as they had swapped their uniform for an array of traditional dress or came sporting the colours of their country’s flag.

Speakers from each class stood at the front to share what they had learned, some using videos, music, artwork and posters they had designed themselves.

Miss Liz Challinor, Year One teacher and one of the organisers, said: “The pupils have loved it and learned so much, even the little ones.

“They have learned map skills, found out about flags and history, and done many others things they wouldn’t usually do in the usual timetable.”
