Pupils raise the roof at St Anne’s

CHEERS AND screams filled the hall at St Anne’s CE Lydgate Primary as the school’s rock band took to the stage for their first live performance.

Formed just seven weeks ago, St Anne’s Rock Raiders includes guitars, drums and vocals from pupils aged eight to ten.

Founder Andrew Bergin, 21, from Springhead, joined in as they played Twist and Shout, Wonderwall and Yellow Submarine for other pupils, staff and parents at the Grasscroft school.

Andrew, who has just completed a music degree at Southampton and is set to start a PGCE at Liverpool, offered to create the band and hold practice sessions every Monday.

And the group proved so popular – with children asking the members for autographs in school – that summer sessions have been arranged too.

Meanwhile, pupils are also working on the school’s peace garden – but they need the help of local businesses to turn it into a reality.

The creative youngsters worked with staff and grounds maintenance manager Paul Tootill to plan the place of reflection and learning, which will be added to current grounds next spring.

The plans, drawn up by Dan Butler, include a music area with bongos and a xylophone, a weather station with sun dial, a stream, reading and relaxing areas, and plants.

But with a long wish list of items required – including donations, blubs and flowers, mosaic tiles, and building materials – the children need a helping hand to move their ideas forward.
