Refloat hopes for sunken boat at Saddleworth marina

A BOAT that has sunk at a Saddleworth marina may be refloated after it was left partially submerged.

As the vessel remains half underwater, a clear smell of fuel billows around Frenches Wharf Marina in Greenfield, behind The Kingfisher pub.

Storms on New Year’s Eve which caused flooding in Saddleworth and a freezing spell early in 2025 have taken their toll.

However, owners of the mooring area have told the Independent there are hopes it will be rescued.

In a statement, Frenches Marina Ltd said: “We are working with the owner of the barge and the canal rescue team to enable the barge to be refloated.

“You will appreciate that a number of vessels were damaged during the storm on New Year’s Eve and as such there is a backlog of rescue operations throughout the north west.

“The marina manager is working with the Canal and River Trust and a cautionary boom has been placed across the opening of the bridge, together with mats near to the sunken barge.”

Frenches Wharf Marina, which lies on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, offers both residential and non-residential moorings.

It is currently full but work will is being planned to move the stricken barge, which also has a tear in one of its windows.
