SCORES OF sightseers enjoying a day out at one of Saddleworth’s favourite beauty spots witnessed a dramatic mountain top rescue.
A 70-year-old man, climbing with a companion, fell 50 feet from Dean Rocks, a crag between Yoeman Hey reservoir and Dovestone, pinpointed in this picture.
Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, headed by Mick Nield, raced to the scene and were backed by the police, with an air ambulance also in attendance.
The casualty, who did not want to be named, was taken to the top of the crag by mountain rescue members and flown to the nearby dam and then taken by land ambulance to the Royal Oldham Hospital.
An observer said: “It was a great team effort by all the services. But mountain rescue were remarkable. They scaled the cliffs like gazelles – a fantastic feat.”
