Residents turn out to elect new-look Saddleworth Parish Council

Parish CouncilA NEW-LOOK Saddleworth Parish Council has been elected to serve the local people.

Across the six wards, 20 councillors were chosen to serve a four-year term as residents turned out in their droves to vote.

Turnouts were 67.85% in Delph, 65.83% in Springhead Lower, 64.85% in Springhead Higher, 72.79% in Dobcross, 71.18% in Uppermill and 70.77% in Greenfield.

Seven Independent councillors were elected, alongside six for the Liberal Democrats, five for the Conservatives and two for Labour.

Three independents won the seats in Dobcross as Lesley Brown (970 votes) and Mike Buckley (772 votes) were re-elected, joined by Keith Lucas (750 votes).

There were three more elected in Delph: Nikki Kirkham (926 votes) Geoff Bayley (750) and Katrina Roman (580).

The five Greenfield seats went to John Hudson (Con 1484) Neil Allsopp (Con 1434) Alan Belmore (Lib Dem 1366) Mavis Bingley (1239) and Jamie Curley (1146).

In Springhead Lower the seats were shared between Barbara Beeley (Lib Dem 1143), Brian Lord (Lib Dem 912), Paul Fryer (Lab 809), Steve Hewitt (Lab 787), Pat Lord (Lib Dem 785).

And in Springhead Higher Derek Heffernan (Lib Dem, 621 votes) and Rob Knotts (Independent, 419 votes) won the seats.

In Uppermill, Conservative Councillors Graham Sheldon (932 votes) and Pam Byrne (529 votes) gained the most votes to be elected.

The Lib Dems had previously held a majority on the council with 11 seats, alongside five Independents and four Conservatives.
