French Farce Boeing Boeing has landed at Oldham Coliseum to entertain audiences this month. Saddleworth Independent editor Aimee Howarth went along for the ride.
USUALLY I am more of a musicals kind of girl, but when classic French farce ‘Boeing Boeing’ landed at Oldham Coliseum, I decided to give it a try.
‘This is your Captain speaking…’ were the first words to ring around the packed theatre in a clever move to get the audience in the mood – and remind them to turn off their mobile phones.
Then it was time to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride that has been thrilling audiences at sell-out runs across the globe for decades.
Set in the swinging sixties, playboy Bernard has the perfect life entertaining not one but three gorgeous globetrotting air stewardess fiancées at his swish Parisian bachelor pad.
Glamour and glitz filled the stage, along with countless comical international stereotypes, as each of the fiancées visited Bernard according to his carefully scheduled love life diary.
Add in bumbling, old school friend Robert and sharp-tongued housekeeper Bertha and it was the perfect concoction for an entertaining and easy-to-watch first half.
But things really took off after the interval as the introduction of a new, speedier Boeing jet meant all three fiancées ended up visiting Bernard sooner than expected.
With tempers flying, tensions building and unexpected kisses thrown into the mix, the comedy really picked up speed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
A few surprising twists kept fresh what could have been a predicable story-line to deliver a fun and fast-moving comedy that is well worth the watch.
Boeing Boeing runs at Oldham Coliseum Theatre from Friday 15 May – Saturday 6 June.Tickets can be booked on 0161 624 2829 or at www.coliseum.org.uk
