Royal exit – Jason and Nicky to leave George pub

A GREENFIELD pub will be looking for a new landlord in June after Jason Worthington confirmed he is leaving The Royal George.

But Jason and wife Nicky, who have transformed the fortunes of the award-winning hostelry since taking over nearly four years ago, are not quitting the licensing trade.

Jason and Nicky Worthington have announced their departure from the Royal George pub in Greenfield

They will continue to run another of the village’s landmark pubs, The Clarence Hotel, which they took on last summer.

“I am seeking new opportunities and new challenges,” said Jason when contacted by the Independent.

“That’s as much as I want to say at this stage.

“The Clarence is a different business and different brewery altogether.”

Plans have already been submitted to provide accommodation at The Clarence.

At the time of taking on his new venture Jason said: “When we took over the George we were petrified. But we stuck with it and turned it into what it is today.

“And the Clarence is going to be on an equal par with it.”

Jason, who is qualifying to become a pilot, and Nicky moved into the JW Lees owned Royal George in March 2015.

A year later it was named the brewery’s ‘newcomer of the year’ and shortlisted for ‘pub of the year’ and ‘most improved pub’.
