Runners challenged to tackle hills for second Alderman’s Ascent Fell Race

RUNNERS ARE challenged to tackle the hills as the second Saddleworth Rangers Alderman’s Ascent Fell Race takes place on Thursday, July 6.

After the success of last year’s event, which raised around £1,000, the club is keen to
establish the run as a popular club fundraiser for the youth teams.

The race is open to anybody who is fit enough to take on the 8k route over Pots and Pans and Alderman’s Hill.

Senior Race Registration (£5 entry) opens at 6pm at Saddleworth Rangers clubhouse and will close at 7.15pm in time for the race start at Churchill Playing Fields 7.30pm.

There are also shorter Junior races starting at Binn Green for anyone from 6 to 17 years of age. Registration (£2 entry) opens at 5.30pm and will close at 6.20pm for race start at 6.30pm.

The Senior race route starts from Churchill Playing Fields and does a clockwise lap of the fields before heading off towards the Pots and Pans monument.

From there, the route heads over to Shaw Rocks and across to the summit of Aldermans Hill. A steep, technical descent down to the A636 Rd is followed by a steep climb back up to the top of Alderman’s Hill before the race leads back down to the playing fields once again.

The race route is mostly off road and covers narrow paths and uneven terrain, with steep, grassy climbs and descents. Competitors do not need experience of fell racing but should have some experience of running on this type of terrain.

There will be Junior category prizes awarded on the night as well as the usual Senior and Vet category prizes back at Saddleworth Ranges’ Clubhouse after the races.

For full details and to register for the race, go on Saddleworth Rangers website or contact Darren Graham: 07876 631490.
