Saddleworth blooms beautiful for Parish Council competition

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL gardens fill Saddleworth with colour and charm thanks to the hard work and devotion of green-fingered locals…

And the most eye-catching of the lot were singled out in the annual Parish Council’s Saddleworth in Bloom competition.

Parish Council chairman Neil Allsopp was joined by gardening expert Frank Ashton and RHS Silver Gilt and Silver award winner Sharon Hockenhull to judge the entries.

Winners gathered at the Civic Hall in Uppermill to receive their awards from Cllr Allsopp while a large slide-show of their wonderful creations was also on display.

The winner of the ‘large garden’ category was Harry Pinkerton from Greenfield, while best ‘medium’ garden’ was awarded to Mr Beck from Greenfield.

John Buckley, from Greenfield, scooped the ‘small garden’ prize while creative Paula Bateson from Uppermill was presented with the ‘container garden’ award.

And the ‘Best Blooming Pub’ winner was the Old Bell Inn at Delph, with owner Phil Whiteman adding a special thank you to his mother for her work in the garden.

Cllr Allsopp said: “Thank you to everybody who entered and for giving us the chance to look around their little bits of heaven.

“All the entries were amazing. I am fascinated by the container category and the wonderful ideas people have for such small places.”

Sharon, who sent a few words to be read in her absence, added: “It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the judging panel.

“It was wonderful to see such passion for growing in spaces of all shapes and sizes and the dedication and hard work put in is fantastic.”
