THREE words summed up the depth of feeling that still exists in Saddleworth when it comes to where it stands – God save Yorkshire.
After chair of the area’s Parish Council, Cllr Barbara Beeley, read out the declaration beside the stature of Ammon Wrigley in Uppermill came the reply that hammered home the sentiment towards the white rose.
It may be 52 years since Saddleworth was taken from the West Riding and placed in the newly formed Greater Manchester, but many people are still Yorkshire at heart.
And at its Yorkshire Day celebrations, on Sunday, August 2, its emblem dominated.
Oliver Benson proudly carried the standard as dozens gathered for the ceremony.
Members of Uppermill and Greenfield Bands combined as the sweet sound of brass echoed through the air.
White rose floral decorations were handed out, many sitting on Yorkshire t-shirts and a steam-powered vehicle featuring what Saddleworth was once under.
The area’s MP, Debbie Abrahams, looked on along with Oldham borough Cllrs Pam Byrne, Shaid Mushtaq and Max Woodvine.
And the parliamentarian said: “I’ve come to celebrate, as I try to do every year.
“I can’t always get there at some times that family things happen, but I do cherish coming to events like this.”
