ALBERT WAS enjoying his night out with friends at the Church Inn and it came as a shock when the landlord called time.
He had not noticed the passing of time and now had the problem of walking home in the dark.
As he set off he tried to decide which would be the best route. He remembered there was a short cut through the Church graveyard that should save him some time so off he set.
After picking his way in the darkness through the many graves, disaster struck.
Albert accidentally stepped into a newly dug grave ready to receive its new resident the following morning.
Standing up, rather shaken but undamaged, he set about climbing out of the six-foot deep family plot – but after a while despite using both hands and feet he realised he could not clamber out because of the smooth, vertical sides.
Slowly he realised his only option was to wait until morning for help. So he squatted down at one end of his newly found dormitory and tried to get a bit of sleep.
However his sleep was soon broken when another late night reveller taking the same short cut home in the now total darkness followed Albert’s example and fell into the grave with a thud.
After getting back on his feet he tried, as Albert had, to clamber up the vertical sides but with the same unsuccessful result.
After watching the failed attempt, Albert, from the other end of the grave spoke out of the darkness: “You won’t climb out of here!”
BUT HE DID!
