Saddleworth Cricket Club faces testing month in treble challenge

IT IS a massive month for treble-chasing Saddleworth in the SWB Commercials Saddleworth and District League.

The Well-i-Hole club is battling for honours on three fronts in the league, Tanner Cup and Pro Elite Sports Twenty20 competition.SaddleworthCBTC_Crest_small

And for captain Brian Lord it could be a season to remember as Saddleworth could be the last winners of the league before it merges with the CLL to form the Pennine League in 2016.

“We are doing well and the next month is massive for me and the team as we chase silverware on three fronts,” he explained.

The first piece could be landed on Sunday, August 16 when they have home advantage against Greenfield in the final of the Tanner Cup.

With the score 1-1 in this season’s league meetings, it promises to be an exciting final.

Brian, 25, said: “Greenfield battered us on Whit Friday, but we beat them the next day at home in a close game.

“We generally beat Greenfield at home, and will be hoping that continues in the final.”

Brian pinpoints Greenfield batsmen Alex Peters and Chris Gill as two players Saddleworth will have to be wary of.

Saddleworth also play Greenfield in the semi-final of the T20 with finals day to be staged at Greenfield on Monday, August 31.

And they also know if they win their last six league games, they will be crowned champions for the first time since 2004.

Brian said: “The last major trophy the club won was the Tanner Cup in 2006 so it is great for the club to be doing so well.

“Our second team is also top of its league so there is a good feeling about the whole club.”

Saddleworth were runners-up in the league last season and Brian says the difference this time is the three players they brought in to strengthen the side – brothers Dave and Pete Roberts and Mohammad Shakir who have all made big contributions to the successful season.

Brian, who has played at Saddleworth since he was 15, is in his third season as captain and he says it has its challenges.

“We have such a strong side and competition for places is fierce so it is hard trying to keep everyone happy. It can be hard work, but also rewarding,” he said.

Secretary Graham Oldham explained the main priority is to finish in the top four in the league which will guarantee top division place in the new Pennine League.

  • The Pennine Cricket League will be launched officially on Thursday, September 24 at Oldham Athletic Football Club. It will comprise 24 clubs from the Saddleworth League and CLL.
