WITH 2014 marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, many events have been held throughout the country to commemorate this significant event in world history in which millions of people lost their lives.
On Sunday, November 9, over twenty people assembled at the Cross Keys Inn in Uppermill to start our Remembrance Walk to the War Memorial at Pots and Pans.
Under clear skies we headed up to Pobgreen before traversing below Primrose Hill. After passing White Brook Spring we followed the clear sunken path past Kinder Stones to reach the War Memorial, which was erected to commemorate the men of Saddleworth who fought and died in the First World War. After 1945, the names of those who perished in the Second World War were also added.
Arriving at the towering obelisk, which overlooks the villages of Saddleworth, our little group joined the hundreds of people who had made the steep ascent to attend the Remembrance Service and pay their respects.
After the annual Service of Remembrance, as the crowds quietly made their way back down the hill in silent reflection, our group continued across Dick Hill to the gritstone outcrop of Shaw Rocks.
Continuing north across Rocher Brow, we soon reached Slades Rocks, where we paused for a short while under the sun’s warming rays. On this unusually mild November day, we were in no hurry to descend the hill as we chatted among ourselves while enjoying the splendid views across Saddleworth.
With the tempting taste of a refreshing pint beckoning, we eventually descended westwards to return to the Cross Keys, which has been providing beers and ales to thirsty travellers since 1763.
Chris has recently published a walking guidebook ‘Saddleworth Discovery Walks’ which is available priced £14.95.
The detailed guidebook contains 20 magnificent walks exploring the history, people and landscape of this beautiful corner of the ancient West Riding of Yorkshire.
A percentage of profits made will be donated to Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and Mahdlo Youth Zone (Oldham).
