Saddleworth Hydro opens doors to show off unique turbine house at Dovestone

ENJOY a rare glimpse inside a working turbine house as Saddleworth Hydro opens its doors to visitors.

The turbine house at Dovestone Reservoir

On Saturday, June 30 guests can go into the turbine house at Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield from 10am-4pm to see how it generates zero-carbon electricity right here in Saddleworth.

Saddleworth Community Hydro group designed and launched the innovative turbine, which is the first high head system in England to use an existing dam, in 2014.

Now, after they have been generating renewable electricity for around three years, they are able to provide grants to support local community sustainability projects.

Up to £1,000 is available in the latest round of funding for local organisations with projects that will enhance sustainability in Saddleworth and surrounding areas.

And the deadline of midnight on July 9, 2018 is fast approaching so if you’ve got an idea for an exciting little project in our neighbourhood, get cracking and make it reality.

Saddleworth Community Hydro group said: “We would particularly like applications that will enable young people to participate in activities concerning renewable energy, reduction of carbon emissions and climate change.

“This supports The Oldham Pledge, which seeks to ensure all Year 7 pupils will be able to contribute to environmental sustainability, amongst other things.

“However, we do not rule out other projects, including those where our grant is not the only source of funds.”

Previous recipients include Saddleworth Museum, Dobcross Band Club and Mossley Heritage Centre.

The application form and guidance notes are online: www.saddleworthhydro.co.uk

You can also get in touch with the group via the website if you are interested in applying.
