SADDLEWORTH School’s year seven rugby league team won through to the final of the North West Counties Schools’ Cup after an enthralling 15-14 victory at St John Fisher School, Wigan.
The triumph was secured in golden point extra time courtesy of the nerveless boot of skipper and talisman Lewis Jagger, who slotted home the vital drop goal to send the visiting spectators home across the M62 in jubilant spirits.
Earlier in the fray tries from hooker Harrison Eckersley and winger Dylan Whitchurch had given Saddleworth a 10-0 advantage at the interval.
After the hosts reduced the deficit with a touchdown, Jagger then forced his way over for a try of his own to restore the 10 point advantage for the Saddleworth outfit prior to a spirited comeback in the final quarter of the game from St John’s who levelled at 14-14 as the final whistle blew.
In a game in which the spoils could justifiably have gone to either side, it was left to the coolest player on the pitch to decide the outcome, as Jagger opted for the one pointer from a good field position.
