A DEDICATED Saddleworth charity celebrated four years of raising thousands of pounds towards women’s higher education in Gaza at a social event last month.
The social, organised by the Saddleworth Palestine Women’s Scholarship Fund (SPWSF) group, was attended by around 65 people, including local MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Debbie Abrahams.
Entertainment was provided by London based group ‘The Napiers’ who gave their time for free. There were also stalls selling Palestinians goods, jewellery, handmade crafts and preserves, plants and books.
Video recordings of a number of the women who have received backing from the Fund were played at the event, demonstrating the importance of the charity’s work.
The charity was formed in 2012 to help enable women in Gaza access higher education. A year’s tuition fees – £500 – is beyond the means of many families due to widespread poverty.
SPQSF has raised over £15,000 in its first four years and further donations of £800 were made at the event.
Kathy Brooks, secretary of SPWSF, said: “Along with groups in Sheffield and Bolton we currently sponsor 41 women in Gaza through higher education.
