The Labour Party
The 11 Labour candidates for the Saddleworth Parish Council election on 7 May 2015 are standing for real change to the old ways of the Parish Council. They will give the people of Saddleworth the choice of voting for representatives who will provide a modern, co-operative, proactive, Parish Council that will serve the best interests of the whole community of Saddleworth.
Labour has three priorities for Saddleworth:
- Modernisation: Providing a regularly updated, better, interactive, user friendly website and connections to social media giving the community the benefit of a vibrant hub for the promotion of local news, events and services; seek a review of Parish Council ward boundaries.
- Co-operation: Ensuring the Parish Council gives value for money for the whole of Saddleworth by using its resources to provide services equally throughout Saddleworth, and by serving practical needs such as new allotments and promoting garden sharing schemes, and maintaining our environment, footpaths and monuments.
- Proactive: working with the Saddleworth District Executive and Oldham Council for better services including for Health and Wellbeing, and to manage changes including, sharing staff and premises and supporting the provision of services for the community from local assets and locally promoting innovative Oldham Council projects such as Get Oldham Working and Get Oldham Growing.
Labour’s candidates will change the way the Parish Council works by bringing to it a wholly new approach that will make Saddleworth a better place for local people to live and work.
The Conservative Party
We shall: Make the Parish Council relevant to the people of Saddleworth by continuing to modernise it’s internal structures, communications and outlook. Working constructively with other like-minded Councillors, individuals and organisations to develop a modern and forward-looking Council.
- Continue to review all planning applications in an objective and professional manner. Protect our precious greenbelt, the unique character of our villages and our landscape. Ensure all building is to the highest modern standards of construction and energy efficiency. Fight for crucial investment in better and more modern infrastructure and services which Saddleworth both requires and deserves.
- Manage the Council’s finances responsibly. Working with others we’ll continue to make savings where possible and always look for more. The Precept will be the minimum required to operate and maintain the Council’s assets. Also, to provide quality services and facilities to our communities.
- Develop modern methods of communication between the Council and the people of Saddleworth. Making it easier for them to observe committee meetings, scrutinise the Council and hold it to account.
- Saddleworth is a beautiful place to visit and an outstanding place to live and raise a family. We will always fight to keep it that way by putting people first and party politics second. Saddleworth will always be our priority.
The Liberal Democrats
Local Liberal Democrats have run the Parish Council successfully for the last four years. We are the only party who truly understand the needs of a rural area like Saddleworth.
We have a record of action and a promise of more. Our Parish Councillors will champion Saddleworth’s unique identity and culture by opposing Labour’s land grab of open spaces for massive new housing development. We will also continue Liberal Democrat support for our Whit Friday processions, band contests and other community activities.
We will build a better future for Saddleworth’s young people by supporting our youth services which Labour, Conservatives and the Independent Oldham Borough Councillors voted to close. Liberal Democrats have also been clear: we support a new, modern Secondary School for Saddleworth.
We will deliver jobs and housing for local people by supporting schemes such as the Liberal Democrat-backed development off Queensway, Wellington Road and Buckley Street, which provides affordable housing with priority for Saddleworth people.
We will invest in Saddleworth’s public services by fighting for better train and bus services and acting to support our local libraries. We have also completed the modernisation of the Civic Hall to bring it up to the standards of a 21st Century venue, which is widely used by the community.
Only the Liberal Democrats have a committed, energetic and experienced team which can deliver for Saddleworth.
Saddleworth has a long history of backing its Liberal Democrat Councillors when they stand up for the area. Local people know that only the Liberal Democrats deliver real benefits for our area.
