

SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL have been crowned under-12 and 14 Greater Manchester County Netball Champions.
And they narrowly avoided making it a hat trick of titles as the under-16’s lost in the final of their tournament.
Thirteen schools attended the under-12 event at Bury Grammar School and Saddleworth remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Saddleworth defeated Manchester High, Bury Grammar, St Gabriel’s, Withington High and Hulme Grammar in their pool matches.
They overcame Loreto Grammar 12-3 in the semi finals and Withington High 13-7 in the final.
The under-16’s beat Hulme Grammar 13-10 in the county final at Wright Robinson School which also hosted the under-14 tournament when Saddleworth lost 13-3 in the final against Withington High.
But there has been further recognition for under-14 players Sophie McDermott, Ruby Wilson and Isobel Hallam who have made their debuts for Manchester Thunder’s Development Squad.
There has also been triumphs for the year seven ‘A’ and ‘B’ netball teams which have both become Oldham champions.
The ‘B’ team played in the Oldham Schools’ Rally at Oasis Academy where it remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and conceded only five goals all day. They beat Oasis Academy 10-2 in the final.
Two days later the ‘A’ team followed up the success of their fellow team in their Rally at Newman College where the team remained unbeaten throughout the round-robin tournament and were crowned champions.
Meanwhile, the year seven basketball team completed a grand slam of Oldham schools’ titles at Oldham Ball Hall where they overcame Radclyffe and Bluecoat before defeating Bluecoat 18-10 in the final. Top scorer was Will Marston.

There was an excellent 48-26 victory for the year nine basketball team against Bluecoat with Jonny Marston, Ira Wall, Lewis Kilgour and Matthew Pazos playing starring roles.
The year seven rugby team scored six tries in their 28-16 win against Failsworth at Churchill Playing Fields where Sam Thackeray, Bennet Tupaea and player-of-the-match Josh Yarwood all stood out.
