Saddleworth School pupils transform Dr Kershaw’s gardens

A HARD-WORKING group of Saddleworth School pupils have been praised for transforming part of the gardens at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Royton.

The year 11 students were taking part in the Prince’s Award and showed their unstinting commitment to the community.p18 sadd school pupils

Some of their tasks included staining a large shed, erecting fencing, clearing weeds and laying paving to give easier access to the compost heap.

The Award – launched by education charity SkillForce in conjunction with HRH The Duke of Cambridge – invites young people to plan and implement a programme that will make a significant contribution to their community.

This year SkillForce is celebrating its tenth year of inspiring young people to achieve at school and succeed in life.

Student Sami Achour said: “Being able to take part in the challenge was a really exciting opportunity – not only did we get to design and plan the activity but we were also able to complete the whole thing ourselves.

“It feels like we’ve really achieved something.”

SkillForce Instructor Darren Taylor added: “We are extremely proud of the students’ commitment to the project.

“The group was extremely respectful to members of staff, the patients and their families.”

In a message of support to the charity, the Duke of Cambridge said: “I am immensely proud to put my name to the SkillForce Prince’s Award.

“It rewards young people who have made an outstanding contribution to their community, encouraging them to go further to nurture their personal, professional or educational development.”
