Saddleworth to host civic service with a difference

SADDLEWORTH Parish Council is set to break from the norm by holding its civic service away from Uppermill.

Current chair Helen Bishop will have her ceremony at Greenfield’s Methodist Church on Sunday, February 1 at 2pm.

Normally, the occasions take place in the neighbouring village, but this time Chew Valley Road will be the setting.

Greenfield Methodist Church

“I was christened and attended Sunday School at Greenfield Methodist and it sits opposite our family home of many decades,” said Oldham borough Councillor Bishop.

“So it was the obvious choice for me as I feel a deep affinity with it and also want to highlight and pay tribute to the vital role it plays in community life.”

The service, which will also be attended by the Mayor of Oldham, Cllr Eddie Moores, will be conducted by the Reverend Ken McNally.

It will feature performances by the choir from Greenfield’s St Mary’s C of E Primary School, of which Helen is a former pupil.

Members of the public are invited to attend, and there will be refreshments provided by the chair’s charity committee afterwards in the church hall.

Any donations on the day will go to the chair’s charities for 2025-26, which include local causes such as Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, Funky Fitness and Fun and the Andrew Gidney Foundation.
