WE HAVE completed our move downstairs and had a lovely day welcoming customers old and new to the new office. Thanks to all who helped and came and made it a success.

Gaining some new customers was very welcome and there seemed to be a theme developing with their enquiries as we had several older customers asking to take away younger generations on ‘treat’ holidays.

It made me wonder if there is going to be a bit of an upturn in business on the back of the pension changes due to take effect this month. I am sure astute citizens of Saddleworth will not be forming an orderly queue at Ferrari dealerships but there is a suspicion that those who have the opportunity to draw on their pension pot will see a nice holiday as their due reward for a career of careful saving.

Split in Croatia

The bookings we have had this year have the feel of once in a lifetime type treats as we have booked the Orient Express, a family Caribbean New Year cruise, three generations going to Disney in Florida and a 39 day tour of the Antipodes with business class flights.

I also have optimism for the future as my personal ‘feel-good’ index is the number of city break trips we book. This sort of trip is usually an extra to a person’s annual holiday and are entirely discretionary so the more we do the better the economic ‘mood’ in the area.

One incentive for these trips is the range of interesting destinations available. We have had bookings for Porto, Berlin, Copenhagen, Bilbao, Sofia, Istanbul and a regular favourite is Reykjavik. Quite often if you stick to ‘interesting’ destinations and leave out the requirement of ‘must be hot’ there are some really good value deals.

On a personal note I had the chance to see Split in Croatia last October and was completely charmed by the old town and harbour parts of the city.

It is a less than attractive ride from the airport – with a former communist country’s love of cement factories and a semi derelict port the highlights of the journey – but it is worth pushing on to the far side of town.

Most of the old town is built in and around (and beneath) the former Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement palace completed in 486AD. Once he died the palace was abandoned and gradually colonised with single rooms becoming family homes and corridors becoming streets.

Now to walk around it presents a very eclectic mix of architecture and oddly narrow streets with some very grand buildings thrown in. A good place for a relaxed short break or part of a multicentre Croatia trip.

Finally, does snow at Easter mean we are due for a summer of similarly rubbish weather or a heatwave? Nobody knows of course but I would recommend getting your summer sun abroad especially booked with a quality Travel Agent!
