A GENEROUS women’s group launched into the new year by presenting a cheque for £2,000 to their chosen charity of 2014 after a successful year of fundraising.
Saddleworth Women’s Institute donated the money to Oldham Bereavement Support Services, who provide free help, understanding and support to children and adults.
It followed the WI’s earlier donation of £1,000 last June – totaling £3,000 for the year – which was spent on refurbishing the Support Services rooms and supplying toys and furnishings.
Bill Barlow, chair of Oldham Bereavement Support Services, and Marjorie Gratton, vice chair, collected the money on behalf of the charity.
Bill said: “Thank you for supporting us for the last two years. It has been absolutely brilliant. The money has made a really big difference to us.”
The pair also showed off their ‘Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service’ certificate and glass ingot, which they received recently with the help of a reference from Saddleworth WI president Jess Moreland.
Jess said: “We decided to support Oldham Bereavement Support Services for two years running as they are quite a unique service and a much-needed one. It has been wonderful working with them.”
The WI’s chosen charity for 2015 is Funky Fitness and Fun, a non-profit making community group which promotes health and well-being for people with additional and different needs.
A host of fundraisers are already organised, which will also celebrate the WI Centenary year of 2015, starting on Saturday, March 7 with a unique fashion show at Greenfield Conservative Club from 1-4pm.
There will also be a raffle with great prizes, stalls and the opportunity to purchase the clothes after the show or treat yourself to a unique fashion makeover.
Tickets cost £7.50, including a glass of Prosecco, and are available from WI meetings or telephone: 07866 541560.
Their next event will be an Off the Rails Comedy Club night at the Royal George on Saturday, April 18, tickets available from the Royal George, at WI meetings or online: www.saddleworthcomedy.co.uk
