Saints youngster joins Oldham on loan

OLDHAM beat the 5pm signing deadline to capture Ben Morris from St Helens, a young Welsh international, on loan to the end of the season.

A centre or second-row forward, he was named today in the Wales train-on squad for the World Cup, alongside the Roughyeds prop Joe Burke.

He played twice for Wales in the 2016 World Cup qualifiers and scored two vital tries in the win over Italy.

He was at Blackbrook as a boy, but he has been at Saints since he was 14 and he was part of the club’s unbeaten Academy championship side of 2016.

He won’t be available for Sunday’s derby clash with Rochdale at Bower Fold (3pm) – the final game of the regular season – but he will link up with Scott Naylor’s squad in time for the Championship Shield games, which start on August 6.

Roughyeds have been working overtime in the days leading up to the signing cut-off point, bringing in Luke Hooley from Wakefield Trinity, Jared Simpson from Huddersfield Giants and now Ben Morris from Saints, all on loan to the end of the season.

They’ve also extended the loan deals of Kameron Pearce-Paul and Sadiq Adebiyi from London Broncos and Liam Bent and Connor Williams from Salford Red Devils.

Roughyeds needed an influx of new blood after losing Scott Turner, Phil Joy, Richard Lepori, on-loan Kieran Gill and club captain Gareth Owen with season-ending injuries.
