A COURAGEOUS fundraiser has collected £3,460 and counting after shaving off her hair and donating it to be made into a child’s wig.
Sara Wood, 36, who moved from Lydgate to Ireland aged 19 to train horses, lost all of her locks as part of TODAY FM’s annual shave or dye campaign for the Irish Cancer Society.
She had a number one haircut at the Abbeylands Riding Club leg of the Linda Moore show jumping league, run in memory of her friend who died from breast cancer a couple of years ago.
Former Hulme Grammar pupil Sara, who was a member of Saddleworth Pony Club, will send the cut hair to the Little Princess Trust to be made into a child’s wig.
And her proud mother Bernie, of Grotton, praised her daughter’s bold decision but admitted as an ex-hairdresser she was upset by the dramatic move.
“I think it’s extremely brave of her,” she said. “But to tell you the truth I am devastated. It’s the last thing I would want her to do.
“She’s never had short hair, she’s always had long, girly hair. It will take around three years to grow back to the length it was.
“But Sara’s lost a few friends in Ireland to cancer and wanted to do something. She’s thoroughly excited about how much she’s raised.
“Her attitude is that she’s lost many friends so she can lose her hair.”
