THE SEASON is finally in full swing at Saddleworth Golf Club after a fortnight’s delay due to the unexpected snowfall in late March.
The Captain’s Drive-In, which marks the start of the season, produced drama as three pairs finished on 43 points with card play offs needed to determine the winners.
Stuart Potts and John Knight emerged the victors from runners-up Philip Legg and Ian Buckley. Third were Trevor Squibbs and Roger Devy.
Lady Captain’s Drive-In also took place on the same day and the 12-holes Stableford was won by Lilian Howarth and Sue Booth with 26 points from second-placed Kath Whitehead and Fiona Hesten who scored 24.
The qualifier for the PGA Medal was won by Ben Pullen with a score of 79-14-65.
Runner-up was Danny Guerriero (79-11-68) while third place went to Graeme Hall (74-5-69).
Ladies’ yellow ball team winners were Anita Scholes, Denise Brown and Pam Tomlinson with 35 points from second-placed Jane Wild, Lady Vice Captain Julie Ward and Lady Captain Pauline Richardson who were three points adrift.
Sue Booth and Denis Brown were winners of two separate singles Stableford competitions which have been held.
Kaye Orme was crowned winner of the Spring Meeting, an 18-hole Stableford which saw her score 37 points – one clear of runner-up Fiona Heston.
The competition was played over two days to accommodate lady members who were working and unable to make the midweek date.
Players on the first day had the best of the weather while the bulk of the 41 players in midweek had to endure wind and rain with the last three players walking in due to thunder.
