A DEDICATED Lydgate guide leader is the latest winner of a coveted Above and Beyond community award.
Sue Rooke joined the Girl Guides aged seven and during around 35 years as a leader has shown total commitment to the development, safety, enjoyment and education of the groups.
She was presented with her jade plaque and winner’s certificate by Rosemary Brierley at a glittering Love Lydgate Lunch at the White Hart.
The Above and Beyond awards celebrate unassuming locals who go the extra mile to help others.
Sue’s award citation read: “Sue oversees the camping trips, organising meals, timetables, shopping for, planning and communicating project rules, requirements and designating to other leaders the responsibilities of such trips.”
It continues: “She is also involved with fundraising for the group, such things as bag packing days at Tesco’s.
“All this is while having three children of her own, a part-time job and a husband who had a most traumatic road accident several years ago.
“Sue is always happy to work within all aspects of the community, whether planting bulbs or supporting fairs, sales and functions.”
The citation added: “Sue probably doesn’t think she does anything special but always does everything with a smile and puts community requirements before her own.
“Thirty-five years as a guide leader is a major commitment and one she enjoys and fulfils more than can be expected of anyone, especially on a voluntary basis.”
Rosemary Brierley made a touching speech at the ceremony, reminiscing about Sue’s early years as a guide and then Leader.
In response, Sue thanked everybody for their support and made a presentation to her four current guide leaders and friends, who received a token badge for their dedication and support to the Rainbows and guides.
