Stay fit and relaxed through pregnancy with yoga sessions

PREGNANCY yoga sessions are being run at the Satellite Centre to help women stay fit and relaxed.

The sessions are run at the centre on Wellington Road, Greenfield, by popular local tutor Debbie Cumming on Wednesday evenings.

“Yoga is a great way to learn how to relax and stay fit throughout your pregnancy and beyond,” she said.

Research suggests that pregnancy yoga is an excellent and safe way to exercise and has many benefits for women and their babies, including reducing stress and anxiety.

It also increases the strength, flexibility and endurance of muscles needed for childbirth and decreases lower back pain, nausea, headaches and shortness of breath.

A typical pregnancy yoga class with Debbie will include:

Breathing Exercises: You’ll be taught a number of breathing techniques which can help to bring calmness to the body and mind. Breathing techniques can reduce anxiety and help you through contractions during labour.

Gentle yoga postures and stretching: You’ll gently move your body into different positions aimed at creating space for baby and helping to relieve aches and pains. The postures and stretches help to develop your strength, flexibility and balance. Props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks are available to provide support and comfort.

Relaxation: You will learn techniques to relax the muscles, release tension from the body and switch off your busy mind.

Friendships: Pregnancy yoga is a great way to meet other mums-to-be, have a chat and make new lasting friendships.
