Students from Oldham Sixth Form College tackled borough politicians over local issues that matter to them at a Local Democracy Week event in October.
The college organised the Question Time style event in partnership with Oldham Council and students had the opportunity to put their questions to members of the council.
The panel consisted of Cllr Sean Fielding, Leader of Oldham Council and Oldham Labour Group, Cllr Howard Sykes, Leader of Oldham Council opposition group and Oldham Liberal Democrats, and Cllr John Hudson, Leader of Oldham Council Conservative group and Oldham Conservatives.
Students asked questions on a range of important and relevant topics, including youth voting, mental health, homelessness and rough sleeping, the emergency services and local public transport.
They also had the opportunity to vote on all the topics debated, giving the councillors an insight into young people’s views on important political topics.
Emily Moore, an A Level Politics student, said: “I was really inspired by the event. It gave me an insight into the work that local democracy involves.
“Even though I found some of the views of the councillors controversial it inspired me to get involved grassroots politics.”
