WATERHEAD WARRIORS’ first-team may be struggling, but that is not the case with the junior sides at Peach Road.
And their successes in 2015 represent a glimpse into what could be an exciting period for the club as they eventually break into the first team.
The under-15s won the double after being crowned North West Counties League, division one champions and Oldham Cup winners after beating Rochdale Mayfield 36-16 in the final with Liam Leach scoring a hat trick of tries while there were also touchdowns for James Perks, Darrell Kershaw, Jack Bradbury, Dane Taylor and Jake Allen.
The under-15s were also runners up in the Lancashire Cup losing to Newton Storm in the final.
There was also a double for the under-14s as they, too, were crowned NWCL, first division champions and completed back-to-back promotions and Oldham Cup winners.
They beat Oldham St Anne’s 16-10 in the cup final with tries from Bradley Jinks, Joe Wallace and Asa Rogers.
It was also a successful season for the under-13s as they were crowned NWCL, division two champions, won the NWCL Shield and were runners-up in the Oldham Cup.
And as Mick Slicker jnr, who is in charge of the junior set up, explained: “The future looks really good as we wait for these players to come through to the first team.
“What has happened to the open-age team in recent seasons has been sad, but throughout the club we have lots of promising junior players.
“In fact I would say we probably have the strongest junior set up in the town so the foundations for future success are there.”
