Success for rugby girls on debut

SADDLEWORTH School’s Under-13 girls’ rugby team finished runners-up in its first tournament.

The year eight girls finished second in the Yorkshire Rugby Festival which was hosted by Manor Croft Academy, Dewsbury.

Saddleworth were invited as special guests by James Westerby, a female rugby development manager for Huddersfield Giants, who had delivered free coaching sessions at Saddleworth School.

The girls started the day well securing a 14-6 win over Manor Croft.

Saddleworth’s only loss in four games came in their second match when they were beaten 12-8 by St John Fisher, last year’s national champions Millie Wildbore scored both of their tries.

The final two games saw Saddleworth post convincing wins against Whitcliffe Mount and Spen Valley.

Notable performances came from Miranda Lowe, Maisie Mitchell, Anya Whyatt, Martha King and Iris Robinson.
