A SCHOOL project turned into a special fundraising effort for one determined junior school pupil who wanted to go the extra mile.
Because when Mason McCabe, who is in year 4/5 at St Chad’s in Uppermill, and his class were asked to do presentations on their North West hero, he ended up raising £311.11 as well.

Other pupils researched their own family members or picked celebrities ranging from Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel and suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst to footballer Paul Scholes and cyclist Bradley Wiggins.
But Mason picked the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team (OMRT), who often visit the school to show off their equipment and rescue dogs, as they celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
He decided to raise some money for the team, who rely solely on donations, so took on a sponsored 60ft wall climb at Awesome Walls in Stockport and baked cakes to sell in school.
Mason presented the money to Adam Knight, an OMRT volunteer of ten years who has two children at St Chad’s, to help fund the team and go towards medical and rescue equipment.
Teacher Miss Dunkerely said: “Mason has worked really hard and you wouldn’t believe how many cakes we had. They were delicious!”
All the pupils put together presentations, ranging from videos, booklets and powerpoints, to share what they had found out about their chosen heroes as part of their humanities work.
Sam Bowden also picked OMRT and interviewed some of the team members for his video to present to the class.
The school also donated around £400 to the OMRT in May after the whole school completed a sponsored 2.3-mile ‘Pots and Pans Challenge’ up Alderman Hill.
