A GAGGLE of fisherman on the canal bank in Diggle got the shock of their lives when Jed, the affable Labrador, came into view…

Because he’d got his own catch of the day – a giant carp gently folded into his mouth.
Four-year-old Jed was determined to show off his amazing find after taking a dip in the picturesque Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
His owner Richard Booley, who lives at Greenfield, said: “He proudly walked up and down the canal bank wanting to show his prize off to everyone including a bunch of walkers.”
Mr Booley, 50, boss of a management consultancy, takes Jed and his other Labrador, Millie, on regular walks along the canal.
“They are a great pair,” said Richard. “They’re both by nature very curious but Jed is a bit of a blunderer with some of his antics.
“We’ve actually nicknamed him ‘Jedward’ after the Irish group because of his clumsy antics.
“Both Labradors love exploring and Millie’s normally a bit faster off the mark. But Jed suddenly came out of the canal clasping this large fish.
“Although the fish was dead it didn’t bother Jed and he was happy to prance around with it.
“I don’t know if he actually caught the fish himself but a couple of local walkers who were passing quipped he was having better results than the anglers!”
Top local vet Ian McConnell said: “I’ve never heard of anything like this before – it’s quite remarkable. But Labradors do have a retrieving nature. “Who knows, perhaps it will be a new way of catching fish!”
