MEDAL WINNERS: Saddleworth School’s successful badminton players

SADDLEWORTH SCHOOL have been crowned Oldham schools’ boys badminton champions.

Jonathan Marston (year nine), Matthew White, Cav Purtill and Isaac Ashworth (all year eight) between them won five gold medals and one silver in the tournament at Oasis Academy which attracted six schools.

They amassed 31 points to beat Hulme Grammar into second place by two points, though both go forward to represent Oldham in next year’s Greater Manchester Youth Games.

Matthew won all his singles matches, but only picked up silver by scoring fewer points than the overall victor.

He won a gold in the doubles, however, as he and Jonathan were undefeated.

Cav won all his singles matches to capture gold and, partnering Isaac, they claimed the doubles title as they, too, were unbeaten.

Meanwhile, the year seven rugby team won 22-14 at Penketh High where player-of-the-match Sam Thackeray scored two tries while there was one touchdown apiece for Josh Harwood and Robbie Coates.

Brandon Turner kicked two conversions and Sam Thackeray landed one kick.

Elsewhere, the second ‘Sports Partnership’ event between Saddleworth and Waterhead Academy has taken place.

This time it was Saddleworth’s turn to host the event and pupils from both schools took part in badminton, dance, football, gym sessions and netball with Waterhead emerging victorious.
