A STAGGERING £18,000 was raised for charities as the community flocked to enjoy a splendid weekend at the Saddleworth Summer Show.
Organised jointly by Saddleworth Rotary Club and Oldham Metro Rotary Club, the action-packed event welcomed more than 6,000 visitors to Saddleworth School.
Even snooker star Steve Davis put in an appearance, organised by one of the show sponsors AWC Home Improvements, to take on all-comers at charity pool in aid of Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.
The other main attraction was Circus Sensible, who staged comedy shows each day in a baby big top and provided circus workshops for adults and children.
Other attractions included a falconry show, llamas, chainsaw and wood carving displays, drystone walling, the RRG new car display and brass bands.
A fun fair, go-karts and donkey rides kept the children entertained, while all guests tucked into a large selection of food and drinks.
And local talent was showcased by Delph and Dobcross Youth Bands and Mossley Abney Orchestra, and businesses offered a selection of craft, charity and commercial stalls.
Richard Bartlett, President of Saddleworth Rotary Club, said: “This was undoubtedly our biggest and boldest event for many years.
“On Saturday, the weather was fantastic and turnout was a lot higher than expected. The community was in for a treat with many events from traditional Donkey rides to our spectacular Falcon display.
“Sunday was an even busier day. Our highlight was the appearance of Steve Davis and he did not disappoint. He really got into the spirit of the show.
“We were joined by our Mayor and Mayoress and also Saddleworth Parish chairmen and they were very happy with so many people attending and enjoying themselves.
“A great big thank you for the people turning out for such a wonderful weekend and thanks go to all our sponsors and supporters who made this a fantastic Summer Show.”
Gordon Russell, show director, added: “On behalf of the Oldham Metro and Saddleworth Rotary Clubs, may I express our thanks for all the support we received.
“To all our sponsors may we offer our appreciation of not only their financial contribution but also the way they added with ideas and initiatives.
“We thank all our show participants for their time and effort in creating an interesting and attractive showcase of local talent and entertainment, and to the Saddleworth School management team for their support.
“Last but not least to our 6000-plus spectators who visited and basked in the warm sunshine, and helped Rotary raise over £18,000 for local and Rotary charities.
“Your support, help and attendance will help the two clubs continue their work for good causes in the future.”
Proceeds will be donated to Rotary charities and will support the BBC Radio Manchester Christie Million Pound Appeal.
