IN her time, Karen Trimming has hiked through jungles, deserts and even trekked up to Everest base camp. Also a keen fell runner, Karen certainly knows the importance of wearing the right type of footwear.
So, if your Christmas shopping expedition leads you into the centre of Holmfirth and a pair of walking boots, hill running shoes or outdoor activity accessories are on the wish list then you have reached your destination.
With over 30 years’ experience in retail and wholesale behind her as well as merchandising and product testing, Karen decided to open her own business.
The result is Peak Footwear, opened in September 2019 and already leaving a quality footprint on the town centre.
The premises occupy the former Santander bank on Huddersfield Road and Karen’s stock has been carefully chosen for quality workmanship, how it fits and how good they are for purpose. These boots are built to last.
Customers will get quality merchandise plus something money can’t often buy these days – five-star customer service.
“Customer service means everything to me,” says Karen, whose stock includes boots by Meindl, Merrell, Hanwag, Scarpa, LA, Sportiva and Hoka.
Suppliers also include Vango, the approved boot for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, and fell running brands like Inov-8, Scott and Hoka.
“I am not going to send anyone out with a pair of boots that are not spot on. I would prefer not to sell them,” said Karen.“I have plenty of people tell me they have bought a pair of boots off the internet but after one wear they can’t walk in them again because ‘they are killing me’.
“I don’t go down the cheap, cheerful and churn it out route. It is quality that will last.
“Everything has been bought in for a specific fit, all with local terrain in mind.”
Karen’s fitting service and eye for detail is key to the success of her business.
For customers with more serious issues she works in tandem with a local podiatrist who will supply custom-made insoles for Karen to fit in the newly purchased footwear.
“I had a few sleepless nights when I decided to take the plunge and open the shop,” she explained.
“But so far the response has been amazing. Locals are really supportive and Holmfirth is staying quite buoyant and seems to be bucking the trend of other high streets.
“The more things open the more confidence it gives other people.”
A future development will focus on her love of fell running in an area known for the pursuit’s popularity.
“In January, I am looking to organise foot runs every Wednesday from the shop along with David Riley from Peakrunners,” she explained.
“People can come in, get changed and go out on training runs.”
You probably wouldn’t run in wellies but Peak Footwear stocks a line of Grubs products plus hats, socks and back packs. You will find Karen at 57, Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth HD9 3JH.
