IDA Ashworth has lost count of the number of miles she’s covered since forming Oldham’s Wednesday Walkers more than 30 years ago.
But friends and members have kept a tally of Ida’s recent birthdays.
So, when it came to the big 90 on August 21, 2018 they ensured the date would be celebrated in style.
Firstly, former chairmen Charlie Webb and David Shipp plus current chairlady Maureen Lindsay presented Ida with a ‘Remember When’ Birthday Book.
The bound volume featured front covers of a National newspaper on August 21 every year from Ida’s birth in 1928 through to her latest birthday.
Then members of Ida’s Amblers group – one of five different branches of the Wednesday Walkers – organised a surprise lunch and birthday cake at The Wine Press restaurant at Hollingworth Lane.
“I just thought I was coming out for a cup of coffee,” laughed Ida. “I didn’t have an inkling.”
Ida formed her Walkers group in 1986 following her retirement from Ferranti in Hollinwood.
“I kept looking out of my window thinking ‘I should be out in the fresh air,’” she explained.
“I knew Oldham Community Centre had two walking groups but both were full-up and not taking any more members.
“So, I decided to start my own. Our first walk was round Dovestone reservoir with 10 people.
“Now, we have 240 walkers in five groups of different grades and ages.
“These days I’m with the Amblers,” laughed Ida who also walks weekly with 88-year-old husband John.
And her favourite walk? “Going to Dovestone is as nice as anywhere!” she said.
