Top brass! Uppermill Band win battle of Britain

UPPERMILL Band has marked 40 years in existence with the best result in its history.

Representing the North West at the National Championship of Great Britain, Uppermill played their hearts out to become Section 3 champions. Not far being in achievement was Boarshurst Silver Band, Greenfield, who finished third in Section 1.

But it was Uppermill celebrating after just their sixth appearance at the Nationals since 1979.

Uppermill Band Chairman John Ward said: “What a fantastic result and in the band’s 40th anniversary year too.

“Those anxious moments prior to the announcement and then hearing National 3rd Section champions, ‘Uppermill’, is a moment to be treasured.

“Our preparation and team work was the key. Everyone worked so hard in the lead up and gave an excellent performance on the day under musical director, Dean Redfern. The result was so richly deserved.”

Dean added: “The test piece, Viking Age, was a beautiful piece of music which allowed us to play a very musical rendition.

“I am so proud of all the players who delivered a stunning performance. It is a real privilege to conduct this band.”

Band secretary, Katie Woodward, attended the contest draw and Uppermill were drawn to play fifth in a field of 18 bands who had qualified from across Great Britain.

Their performance was later described by the three adjudicators as full of atmosphere, tenderness and one that demonstrated excellent control of dynamics.

Adjudicator, Paul Holland, summarised the contest and explained, in the opinion of the adjudicators, there was “one clear winning band.’

After a tense few moments Uppermill Band and their supporters in the hall erupted with delight on hearing they had won.

This result is the pinnacle of Uppermill Band’s 40 year history and they thanked everyone who supported during the year to make this victory possible.

4barsrest.com described Uppermill Band’s performance as” “A performance full of musicality, so well directed by the MD.”

Boarshurst were one of 16 bands competing in the first section competition. Under MD James Garlick, the Greenbridge Lane based band played fifth last.

“It certainly had lots to appreciate and was very well thought out. One to ponder in the box for sure.”

National Championship of Great Britain — Section 1 winners were Unison Kinneil of Scotland followed by Rainford from Merseyside.

  1. I played when I was a youngster in Mossley’s band. This was when I was 9 or 10 In 1943 or 44. I was friends with a few of the members but principally with Harold Robinson who played a trombone very well. I am 90 now and living in Australia and I found a Harold Robinson who looks as if he might be my Harold’s son. And as Harold was a couple of years older than me I figure he may still be with us. I went on to join the army and instead of cornets and horns being previously played I was handed a flute which I played for many years. Just like the army!
