TWENTY FIVE years ago a young Uppermill butcher set up shop with his new business and welcomed his first eager customers…

Now this month, Paul’s Quality Meats is celebrating a quarter of a century selling quality cuts to the people of Saddleworth.

From beef, pork, lamb, bacon and sausages to chicken, cooked meats and much more, the friendly butcher’s shop is brimming with home-made or locally sourced products.

And there’s also a mouth-watering selection of award-winning pies and cheeses, free range eggs, Saddleworth honey and muffins or tea-cakes to choose from.

It all began back in 1990 when Paul Lowcock, who began butchering aged 13, took the leap aged 26 to launch his business within the Spar store on the high street.

About five years later he moved his growing business to his own corner shop just down the road, where he still sells top products at competitive prices today.

And his customer base has expanded so much that he now supplies top local restaurants, pubs, schools and nurseries as well as loyal individuals.

Now a five-star butcher, Paul has a diploma in hygiene and makes sure his team always offers the best service possible in the shop and on their delivery rounds.

Paul’s Quality Meats has also been a member of thebestof Oldham since July 2014, receiving top reviews through the community hub as a recommended business in the area.

And as he celebrates the landmark anniversary on October 14, Paul – who recently proposed to partner Gill at the top of the Eiffel Tower – has arranged some mouth-watering roll-back deals for his customers.

He explained: “We’re turning back the clock with some offers over the next few weeks similar to ones we had years ago.

“25 years has flown by! I would like to thank all my customers for their support.”

Paul, who is a founder member of the Saddleworth Christmas Lights Committee, has also built up a reputation over the years for his kind-hearted donations.

“I just can’t say no – it’s part of what I do!” he laughed. “We’ve donated vouchers, raffle prizes, gifts, meat donations for events – you name it and I’ve given it!

“I’m also part of the Saddleworth Round Table and I do a lot of charity work. It’s really important and means a lot to me.”

Meanwhile, PAUL’S FRIENDLY face gives a beaming smile up from an age-old fading newspaper cutting…

It is a treasured reminder of the anniversary of his first year in business now carefully laminated and lovingly on show in his front window.

But the cutting also has a poignant story behind it, bringing back fond memories of friends and customers.

Paul explained: “I had a great customer called Barbara who lived in Uppermill and used to come into the shop regularly.

“She also came in every Whit Friday with her husband Charlie, who was blind, to sit in their chairs and listen to the bands, as it was quieter in here than on the street!

“When Barbara died several years ago, Charlie told me she had left something for me. He didn’t know what it was as he couldn’t see it!

“It was a cutting from a local newspaper about me celebrating my first year of business in Spar and Barbara had saved it for all those years.

“That means so much to me and now I’m keeping it safe too.

“Charlie died a few years ago – actually on Whit Friday! The cutting is a nice reminder of them as well as my time in business.”
