Hundreds of runners will tackle some of Saddleworth’s steepest roads when Oldham’s Halloween Half Marathon returns next month.
The gruelling 13.1-mile race takes place on Sunday, October 25, with a route climbing to 340 metres above sea level before taking competitors through several Saddleworth villages.
Starting on St Mary’s Way in Oldham town centre, runners will face a steady climb towards Grains Bar, the highest point of the course.
They will then head into Saddleworth, passing through Delph, Dobcross and Uppermill, before continuing through Grasscroft and Lydgate on the return journey.
The final stages take competitors through Lees and Glodwick before they head back into Oldham town centre and cross the finish line.
The hilly course has earned a reputation as one of the toughest half marathons in the country and has attracted hundreds of runners each year since the event began in 2012.
Stuart Lockwood, Chief Executive of Oldham Community Leisure, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the return of the popular half marathon back to Oldham for another year.
“The course remains as challenging as ever, even for the most seasoned runners, but it’s an unforgettable experience for everyone who takes part – one of the reasons this event has been so popular over the years.
“I invite you all to join me this year – it’s set to be a fantastic event for the whole town.”
Rebecca Fletcher, Director of Public Health at Oldham Council, said the race also provided an opportunity to showcase the borough and its countryside.
She said: “Oldham’s half marathon really is one of a kind, as it not only lets us showcase our stunning landscape and the wider borough to visitors but also brings our local community together and supports our local businesses.
“I encourage everyone to get involved and come out to support the runners on what is set to be a momentous day for our borough.”
The event is open to runners aged 17 and over, whether competing for a personal challenge, raising money for charity or simply taking part for fun.
Entry starts at £35, with places available for £33 for members of local running groups and clubs.
Spectators are also expected to line the route through Oldham and Saddleworth to support runners as they take on the challenging course.
