Dramatic trophy delight for Saddleworth School footballers on double hunt

THE ALL conquering year nine football team from Saddleworth School has completed the first part of a double.

They won the Oldham Schools’ Cup in dramatic style defeating Failsworth following a penalty shootout.

The game, which was played at AVRO, finished goalless after extra time as the outcome was determined by spot kicks as Matthew Barlow, Dylan Hey, Adam Howarth and Harrison Jackson scored all four of Saddleworth’s kicks.

Failsworth missed two as goalkeeper Ewan McFarlane made one save and another was ballooned over the crossbar as they won 4-3.

Meanwhile, Saddleworth won the cup in year eight, also defeating Failsworth in the final.

They will now be heading to Boundary Park on Friday, May 15 to contest the League final.

And seven of the team could finish the season with four pieces of silverware as they are also members of the Uppermill Juniors’ team which has won through to the finals of two county cup competitions.

Elsewhere, Saddleworth’s year nine basketball team has won through to the quarter finals of the National Schools’ Cup following a 72-68 victory against Liverpool’s Archbishop Beck. They now play away to Liverpool’s Bluecoat on Friday, April 24.

There was disappointment as Saddleworth lost on the away ruling to Royal High Wycombe in the last 16 of the year seven National Schools’ Cup after the home game ended 20-20

Lucas Clarke scored an excellent try for Saddleworth while Cameron Haigh was the team’s top tackler.

Meanwhile, Saddleworth School’ gymnastics team of Abbie Whiteley, Calese Reid, Amy Cook, Charlotte Lyness, Gabrielle Laird and Alex Lovatt finished as runners up in the English Schools’ North West Under-19 Sixer Competition.

Abbie and Calese also won the under-19 age group pairs event and will now represent the North West at the British Schools’ Championships at Stoke next month.

What made the achievements so special was that most of the Saddleworth girls are aged 14 and they were competing at under-19 level.
