U16s netballers seal spot in regional finals

SADDLEWORTH School’s Under-16 netball team finished runners-up in the Greater Manchester schools’ championships.

But by finishing in the top two, Saddleworth qualified for the regional finals which will be at Wright Robinson College, Gorton, in January.

In the county event, also held at Wright Robinson, Saddleworth lost 21-18 in the final to Oldham’s Bluecoat School.

They had earlier won all seven groups games against Cardinal Langley, Parrenthorn, Bolton School, Withington High School for Girls, Oldham Hulme, Bury Grammar and Swinton’s Moorside High School.

Saddleworth beat Altrincham Grammar School for Girls 13-9 in the semi-final before losing to Bluecoat.

Last year, Saddleworth also made it to the regional finals where they lost in the final to Bluecoat.

The U14s narrowly missed out on making it a double as the current year eight and nine girls’ team lost in the semi-final of the Greater Manchester schools’ championships.

In their pool, Saddleworth, national champions at this age group in 2012, were unstoppable.

They won all but one of their group games against Stockport Grammar, Oldham Hulme, Loreto High School, Manchester High School for Girls, St Gabriel’s and North Chadderton.

Saddleworth were beaten 14-8 by eventual winners Withington High School for Girls in the semi-finals.
