A SADDLEWORTH football club is sweating on the outcome of a league investigation after one of its matches was abandoned amid ugly scenes.
Fans poured on to the pitch at Springhead AFC and confronted players after the home side scored a penalty that was awarded with 15 seconds remaining to go 4-3 ahead against Moston Brook in the Manchester League’s Murray Trophy.
Social media footage shows scorer Connor Berry going up to one of the visiting players on the touchline. However, it is thought they may actually be friends.
It then cuts to scenes of large groups in the middle of the Ashfield Crescent ground, which saw a crowd of about 350 people attend, as the referee called time early on Saturday, February 1.
It is thought other players sparked the confrontation and there are claims a bottle was thrown at a Springhead player.
When the home team reacted, other visiting players joined in what was described as a ‘huge brawl.’
Now both Springhead and Moston Brook are awaiting the verdict of the Manchester League, which confirmed to Saddleworth Independent it will look at reports before deciding whether to investigate the incident.
A spokesperson said: “The league will not make any comments at this time until the necessary reports have been submitted and finalised by both County FAs concerned.
“The league will put a statement out following this.”
