UNIQUE DISPLAYS will fill the windows of homes and businesses in Uppermill once more as the popular ‘living advent calendar’ returns.
Each day from December 1 to Christmas Eve, a new window will unveil its colourful display across the village, just like a conventional advent calendar.
Villagers and tourists alike will be able to hunt out the windows in a trail until the life-sized calendar finishes on Twelfth Night on January 5.
The ‘living advent calendar’ is now in its fourth year after proving a hit with residents since being launched in 2013 by local Erica Ryan.
This year the theme is Christmas Around the World and Erica says participants new and old are clamouring to take part.
“Some houses are the same as last year while others are new, including Authentic and Reclamation Room,” she explained.
“Every year I am struck by the amazing variety and creativity displayed. Some of our windows are amazing and intricate, but often the simple, bold ones are just as striking.
“I never know what people are doing until it’s revealed, so it’s a surprise for me too!”
When she launched the calendar, Erica explained: “I had never heard of a life-sized advent calendar until I just happened to visit the one in Saltaire in 2012 and I absolutely loved it.
“It felt like a gift – people had got together and planned and decorated with no other agenda, just to bring Christmas cheer to whoever happened to pass by.
“I immediately knew I wanted an Advent Calendar like that in Uppermill and recruited friends and acquaintances to make it happen.”
