THE internet is great but who doesn’t love a letter or parcel from home?
So, Dobcross residents have been busily making up for lost time now the village post office has finally re-opened.
They’ve been sending packages of all shapes and sizes from the Woods Lane premises much to the delight of postmaster Brian Hodgkinson and wife Andjelka.
The longest day – June 21 – marked a red-letter day for the couple who had previously re-launched Dobcross’s only shop on April 17, 2019.
But it also signalled the end of a frustrating few months as opening dates for the post office side of the business came and went.
“It’s been very noticeable the increase in trade since the post office opened,” said Brian.
“Unfortunately, we have lost opportunities through no fault of our own.”
Installation of new computers, problems with the new computers and then lack of trainers saw an original date of June 3 come and go.
“We signed a contract on April 2 so we thought we’d open in a couple of weeks,” added Brian.
“Unfortunately, it turned out longer than we hoped,” he smiled ruefully.
“It’s been a struggle but we are there now and it’s great to see how the community are responding. There are lots of happy smiles.
“We’re getting lots of stuff dropped off for collection and a lot of people in the village seem to be trading on eBay.
“We’ve had quite a few things going to Germany and Belgium while the other day we had an item being sent to the Bahamas. That’s our furthest destination so far.”
With Saddleworth’s last bank closing two years ago, post offices have become increasingly vital for customers wanting to draw out or pay in money.
Those services are now available in Dobcross where Brian and Andjelka are assisted by villager and Saddleworth Live promoter Tim Newbold and Michelle Dady.
“There is now no need for people to have to trek into Oldham and endure the hassle of the banks there, when they can carry out the majority of banking tasks right here in Dobcross,” added Brian.
The well-stocked village shop, including locally sourced products, is also trading well.
Dobcross Post Office is open: 8.30 am to 1pm and 2pm-5.30pm on Monday to Friday; 8.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays.
The post office is closed on Sunday but the shop is open between 8.30am to 11.30am for newspapers and provisions.
