OLDHAM BUSINESS owners who network virtually via social media site Twitter came out from behind their screens to met in person for the first time to mark their first anniversary.
Having chatted and connected with each other and the general public for the last 12 months using the OldhamHour hashtag, more than 50 tweeters in the group came together at The Cotton Rooms on Rock Street.
The Oldham Hour twitter account was set up in April 2014 by business owners who already engaged heavily in social media and were looking to connect with other local business and customers.
Since then, it has flourished to well over 1800 followers who gather on a Monday from 9-10pm to share local events and business opportunities using the hashtag #oldhamhour.
Regular #OldhamHour tweeter Vicki Hindle, Ryder and Dutton’s Training and Social Media Manager, said: “We really enjoyed the social as it gave us the opportunity to meet some of the other businesses we have been getting to know over the last few months.
“It’s great to see so many local companies looking to support each other and work together. A fun evening with great company … can’t wait for the next one!”
Nayereh Kelly, from the Wellness Club UK, added: “Oldham Hour is a fast paced, friendly place to meet local businesses and I’ve made some exceptional connections. It’s beneficial for all.”
Guests at the event ranged from architects, photographers, graphic designers, solicitors, estate agents, PR Company, printers, cake makers and caterers, gate and fence manufacturers to local charities and IT geeks.
Lee Hollinworth, of Whittaker Design and the original host of Oldham Hour, said he is delighted at how the group has progressed.
“Many people interact each week under the ethos of ‘Get Oldham Talking’. There is quite a lot of banter, but in the main, sharing of information about events and business opportunities,” he explained.
“It’s a friendly meeting place for businesses, event organisers and the people of Oldham.
“Many participants have gained good connections and are now working together or refer work to each other, or have simply gained new clients.”
