A FRIENDLY walking club is putting its best foot forward to take in the glorious Saddleworth countryside with the warmer season.
The Saddleworth Pedestrians – known as ‘the Peds’ and set up 44 years ago – provide walks for most abilities for more than 100 members across the borough.
They walk regularly in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire and also enjoy coach walks and weekend holidays further afield.
They have at least three walks on each walking Sunday, ranging from six to ten-plus miles, which are led by an experienced walk leader (9am start from Lees Library for long walks, 10am for shorter walks).
And they also have a vibrant social calendar, which includes an annual Hoe Down in October and Tuesday evening walks locally followed by a visit to the pub in the summer.
During the winter programme, Tuesday walks are replaced by a guest speaker at their meetings at Springhead Liberal Club (second Tuesday of each month at 8pm), covering topics from expeditions to Vancouver, Saddleworth Hydro, to beekeeping.
Colin Deaville, a member of the club, said: “We are a very friendly club and want to make people more aware of what we can offer. Everyone is most welcome!”
