A FORTIES Night will liven up Dobcross Band Club on Saturday, June 15 as Saddleworth Women’s Institute puts on another fundraiser for its chosen charity.
There will be a dance lesson and demonstration by the Backstep Boogie Club, a pie and peas supper, a raffle, a prize for the best forties-themed outfit, and live music from Jump, Jive and Wail.

TRAIN LOVERS young and old can enjoy a Model Railway Exhibition at Saddleworth Museum in Uppermill on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday 23.
Presented by the Pennine Model Railway Society, the event offers layouts in gauges N; 00; and HO, and is supported by modelling trade and book and video stands.
The exhibition is open from 10am-5pm on Saturday and from 10am-4pm on Sunday, with refreshments available and entry costing £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for children.

Wine
RAISE YOUR glass for a good cause at The Clarence in Greenfield on Thursday, June 20 as they host a wine tasting evening in support of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.
The event will start at 7pm and tickets include a glass of wine and tasters from The Clarence’s tapas menu, accompanied by live music from Stu Morrison and wines from The Saddleworth Wine Vaults.

Piecemakers
A COLOURFUL and creative exhibition by the Piecemakers quilting group will be on display in St Thomas’s Church and Hall, Delph, on June 22 and 23.
Running from 10.30am-4pm, the event will also include traders selling fabrics and sewing equipment, a tombola, refreshments and a sales table.
Tickets for the group’s annual raffle for their quilt will be on sale and the draw will take place at 3pm on June 23, with proceeds donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.

History
TURN BACK the yeas with the Saddleworth Historical Society as they host illustrated presentation ‘Religious Dissent in the Parish of Saddleworth 1662 – 1939’.
The presentation will be given by historian Alan Petford at the Saddleworth Museum Gallery, Uppermill on Wednesday, June 12 at 7.30pm.
Entry is free and refreshments are available, with prospective new members welcome.
Bridge
ONGOING PROBLEMS at the bridge in the centre of Delph will be discussed this month by the Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership.
The issues, highlighted in Independent’s May edition, have prompted Royce Franklin, chair of the Traffic and Transport Sub-committee for Saddleworth and Lees, to say: “The sub-committee have been looking at this for some time.
“From its meeting held in early May, it is recommending to the District Partnership there is a realignment of road markings into Delph from Denshaw and signs are erected to indicate who has priority over the bridge.”
Market
A FLEA market will be held at Uppermill Civic Hall on Sunday, June 9 in aid of Wrigley Mill Bowling Club in Diggle.

RESIDENTS CAN tell Oldham Council about the issues that matter to them as the Local Authority carries out its ‘You and Your Community Survey 2013’.
Independent researchers Ipsos MORI have been commissioned to seek the views of 23,000 randomly selected Oldham households.
Completed surveys should be returned by Friday, June 21, and will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win £100 or one of three £50 prizes.

ENJOY AN afternoon at the fair at Christ Church Hall on Oaklands Road in Friezland on Saturday, June 29.
From 1pm-4pm, there will be stalls to enjoy, including cheese and wine, home bake, jewellery and many more.
There will also be a café serving afternoon teas, games for the children, and entertainment from Friezland Brass band.
Flooding
A LARGE scale project to solve flooding across Saddleworth is being planned and residents are invited to get involved at a public meeting on Thursday, June 20.
Organised by Councillor Garth Harkness, the meeting will start at 7pm at the Uppermill Civic Hall, and people can question representatives from United Utilities, Environment Agency and Oldham Council.
Cllr Harkness got involved after flooding last year in Dobcross, Woods Lane, Churchfield, New Road and Delph New Road.
Investigative work and clearing was carried out along with resurfacing work in some areas, but an agreement for a large scale project has been made with Oldham Councillor Jean Stretton.
An assessment of the River Tame and solutions to reduce its flooding will take place.

DENSHAW’s VILLAGE cinema has big plans for its small screen with a galaxy of stimulating films.
French film Untouchable is on Saturday, June 8 and Anthony Hopkins plus Helen Mirren will star in Hitchcock on Saturday, June 29.
On Saturday, July 13 The Impossible tells a gripping story of survival in the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand and on Saturday, July 27 Oscar Award winning Life of Pi will be shown.
A Steven Spielberg special Lincoln is on Saturday, August 10 and on August 31 you can enjoy old folks enlivening their decline by becoming rockers in Song for Marion.

The event will start with a brass band in Uppermill’s Museum Gardens, speeches and the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration, followed by a parade along High Street to King George V playing fields for the ‘Country Fair’.

SUMMERY TREATS from local creative traders will be on sale at the Summer Craft Festival on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, 30 June at Uppermill Civic Hall.
The free event, organised by the Saddleworth Creative Network, will run from 10am-4pm and includes traders selling food, arts and crafts items, and face-painting and children’s summer activities.
There is also the return of the ‘Wellness Room’, which premiered at the spring festival and offers sessions of therapies or beauty treatments, and pamper treats to take home.
Church
CHRIST CHURCH Denshaw is celebrating 150 years since its consecration by holding a number of events over the coming months.
The first event is a Songs of Praise evening in the church on Sunday, June 16 at 6pm when everyone is invited to sing your favourite hymns, with refreshments after.
On Saturday, June 22 there is a ‘Party in the Parish’ in the Village Hall from 6pm-9pm, offering a disco and supper for all ages with the theme ‘Disco through the Ages’.

BEATLES CELEBRATION band The Threetles is hosting a special gig on Saturday, July 13 at the Uppermill Civic Hall.

DOBCROSS ELDERBERRIES have announced their provisional programme of events for the year.
They will be holding coffee mornings on Saturday, August 10 and Saturday, November 16 from 10.30-12noon at Dobcross Church room, £1 admission paid at door.
They have also planned an Autumn half-day trip to Nantwich on Tuesday, September 10.

BICENTENARY
THE BICENTENARY of Uppermill Methodist Church is being celebrated with a number of events throughout this year.
On Saturday, June 8 at 7.30pm at the Church there is an Opera Gala Concert with musicians including tenor Sipho Fubesi, The Pennine Singers, soprano Sally Johnson, Duncan Glenday on the piano and conductor Marco Bellasi.

From Friday, June 14 to Sunday, June 16 there will be a flower festival at the Church, including a chance to view the Saddleworth Women’s Institute’s Silver Jubilee Quilt, made in 1977.
There will be a Flower Festival Service on Sunday at 10.45am, conducted by The Ven. Cherry Vann Archdeacon of Rochdale, and refreshments will be available all day.
Opening times are 10.30am to 7pm on Friday, 10.30pm to 5pm on Saturday, and 12.30pm to 5pm on Sunday, with admission costing £3, including programme.
And an exhibition at Saddleworth Museum in the lower (Transport) Gallery will run from May to October, covering Uppermill Wesleyan Chapel 1813-1913 and Uppermill Methodist Church 1913-2013.
The celebrations mark the anniversary of when the first church built on the site was opened on 13 October 1813 and when the first service was held in the present church on 22 February 1913.
Charity
SUPPORT CHARITIES and causes at the monthly coffee morning in the parish community of St Chad, Saddleworth, on Saturday, June 1 at 10a.m – 11.30a.m at The Parish Centre, Station Road, Uppermill.
July’s chosen charity is Motor Neurone Disease, and throughout June the Parish community will be raising funds to fight Pancreatic Cancer.
Entry costs £1, which includes coffee and cake, and all ages welcome. A raffle will be held and greeting cards and other goods are on sale.

Lydgate
A WHOPPING £777.57 was raised at Love Lydgate’s annual Plant and Home Bake sale in aid of the community.
The Lydgate Stitchers made £119.60, which will go towards resources for their next project, and charity donations for tea & coffee came to £92.25.
Love Lydgate chair Jennifer Greenwood said: “We had lots of lovely comments from neighbours and visitors. Lots of people mentioned the friendly atmosphere and sense of community, which is an important part of what we are about.
“It was wonderful to have so much support both in running the event, contributions of cakes and plants and people coming along to spend their money.”
Poems
WELL-KNOWN poet and script writer Julian Jordan is encouraging secret writers to come and share poems, short prose, song, scripts in a friendly, encouraging open-floor session at The Swan Inn, Dobcross.
The sessions take place every second Wednesday of the month, entrance fee £2.

Musicians
BUDDING SADDLEWORTH musicians are enjoying success after reaching the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth.
The Oldham Music Centre Youth Wind Band and the Oldham Youth Orchestra will compete in the event in Birmingham on July 2-6.
At the regional heats, the orchestra impressed judges at Rochdale Town Hall with a selection from Guys and Dolls and Duel of the Fates from Star Wars while the wind band performed The King’s March and Shenandoah.
Art
A CELEBRATION of the arts through paintings and drawings by the Saddleworth Group of Artists will be on display from Saturday, June 1 to Sunday, June 30.
The 2013 Summer Exhibition offers a high standard of local works on a a wide range of subjects at very reasonable prices.

Bridge
OAKFIELD BRIDGE club welcomes players to join them at their weekly sessions at the Freemasons Hall, 138 High Street, Uppermill.
On Mondays, there are sessions from 1p.m to 4p.m for “improvers” who already play but wish to develop their game, consisting of 30mins tuition followed by assisted play.
“Duplicate Pairs” sessions for those who want to play competitive bridge take place on Tuesdays from 7pm, where if you are without a partner there is a host system in place so you are assured of a game.

Library
DENSHAW LIBRARY has around 2,000 books to offer for the enjoyment of the community.
The books are given by the people of Denshaw, tidied and looked after by volunteers, and borrowed by everyone else.
The Library is open Monday to Friday from 6pm – 7pm and most times when the hall is in use.
The library is happy to accept new gifts of books and would like to get in touch with groups in other villages to work on an exchange scheme to broaden the services on offer.
There is also fast broadband in the Village Hall and WIFI throughout so you are welcome to bring your laptop and work in the library.
Roads
MAIN CARRIAGEWAYS will be prioritised as Oldham Council invests £2million this year to the borough’s road system.
Work will include improvements to signage, road markings and street furniture, including basic maintenance like painting and replacing damaged sections.
Potholes which are causing a danger or could give rise to a compensation claim will then be prioritised.
The work is part of the Council’s commitment to ensuring the Borough’s heavily used ‘gateways’ are first class, and utility companies will be required to ensure unfinished work does not cause problems for motorists.
Over the last four years the Council has invested £10 million to improve the road system, and last year fixed more than 4,500 potholes and repaired 27,000 square metres of highway.
Art
ARTISTS ARE invited to submit their work to this year’s ever-popular ‘Oldham Open’ competition and exhibition.
Any artist living, working or studying in Oldham can enter their media, including drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, film and video.
Entries should be made along with a completed form between August 29 and September 7 at the Gallery Oldham reception desk.
The exhibition will run from September 28 to November 16 and offers a visual feast of local talents for both artists and visitors.

Walling
TRADITIONAL SKILLS training on how to build a dry stone wall is being offered to help maintain the historical feature of the South Pennines.
Many miles of these walls have fallen into disrepair but The Conservation Volunteers are working with the Watershed Landscape project, managed by Pennine Prospects, to rebuild them.
The two-day courses will run on the weekends of Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23; and Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, at Piethorne Reservoir, Ogden Lane, Newhey, Rochdale.

MMR
OLDHAM PARENTS are being urged to take their children for the Measles, Mumps and Rubella jab as cases nationwide reach their highest level for 18 years.
There were almost 2,000 cases during 2012 – 159 in Greater Manchester alone – and a national campaign has been launched to get as many 10-16 year olds as possible vaccinated.
