SADDLEWORTH IS treasured by hearts around the globe – including one family who moved to Australia almost two decades ago.
Alan Walker migrated from Manchester Road in Greenfield to McLaren Vale, near Adelaide, in 1997 with his wife and was followed by his mother and father in 2002.
But they love to keep up to date with village news from their former home and are regularly sent copies of the paper by Alan’s mother’s nephew Paul Fryer, who is from Springhead.
Alan said: “We all love to see what’s happening in Saddleworth and have very fond memories of the villages.
“My dad, who passed away last year, used to own G Walkers and Sons Plumbers who worked out of the mill in Spring Street, Uppermill, and my mother used to run Thornton and Higsons Hardware shop in the High Street.”
“Thank you for producing a great paper, we love it.”
Pictured reading the Independent is Mary Walker, Alan’s mother, as she watches Alan’s son, Jack, playing in a cricket match.
