Whit Friday brass band competition becomes Christmas cracker

THE GREATEST free show on Earth is getting a festive twist.

Saddleworth has long been home to the legendary Whit Friday Brass Band Contest, which has been proudly held every year since 1884.

Now, for the very first time, that rich tradition is coming out for Christmas.

Following a conversation between White Lion landlord Alan Warrior and Delph resident, BAFTA-nominated composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper, the brilliant idea was born to create a Christmas Whit Friday Competition, which will take place on Friday, December 12 from 6pm.

Open to all bands, each ensemble takes turns to perform a miniconcert at all three of Delph’s iconic pubs – The White Lion, The Swan Inn and The Old Bell Inn – of 15 minutes in each after being pre-drawn.

And to ensure a completely level playing field, the contest will be judged by three non-brass musicians, whose role is to award the winning prize to the band that delivers the greatest Christmas spirit overall.

No ordinary judges either, for Emmerdale stars William Ash and Andy Moore will be doing the honours, alongside celebrated actor John Henshaw.

They will also decide who takes top prize from a fund of more than £2,000.

A spokesperson for the new contest said: “This inaugural festive festival marks the beginning of what we hope will become a long-standing legacy, starting right here in our wonderful village of Delph – and who knows where it may grow from here.

“So pick your pub, grab a flagon of festive cheer, and enjoy a full evening of spectacular brass band Christmas music, community spirit and celebration.

“From all of us at the first-ever Christmas Whit Friday Competition, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and an unforgettable evening of festive music and joy.”
