YOUNG READERS are invited to feast on their favourite books at a Great British Book-Off on Saturday, September 27 at Sandy Lane Community Church in Dobcross.
The event, hosted by Saddleworth Children’s Book Group’s from 2-3.30pm, is a chance for children aged four to 11 to share their ‘showstopper’ books.
Book Group chair Kate Breitholtz explained: “We want children to bring along a book they’ve enjoyed and tell others why they love it – a sort of show and tell of favourite books.
“We’ll also be reading to them from some wonderful but less well-known books, all with the aim of inspiring and sharing a love of reading.”
Families who go along to the event will also be able to buy new and good quality used children’s books.
The Book-Off is thegroup’s fourth event since its launch in May, with previous events including a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed party, a visit from storyteller Susanna Meese and a book carousel.
Future events include the chance to vote on the Red House Children’s Book Award in October and finding out more about children’s lives during the First World War as part of Non-Fiction November.
Saddleworth Children’s Book Group already has more than 70 members from all over Saddleworth and is linked to the Federation of Children’s Book Groups.
Admission to the Book-Off is free for members but children must be accompanied by a parent or carer. Annual membership of the Saddleworth group is £8 for families with one child, £10 for families with two or more children.
